There are two main types of acupuncture, traditional Chinese acupuncture and modern acupuncture; at Momentum Healthcare we practice the latter. This involves inserting small and thin needles into the muscles around the injured area in order to promote an easing of pain sensitivity, improved function and aid recovery.
Currently there are a number of theories as to how modern acupuncture achieves this, the leading concept is the needle stimulating the body to interrupt the pain signal, thereby reducing the sensitivity of the area. In practice we have observed a very individual response to acupuncture, with some having significant improvements from receiving it and others having no effect to acupuncture at all. Due to this, we usually utilise other treatment approaches alongside acupuncture and recommend the use of this treatment ‘tool’ on a case by case basis.
